In a recent statement on the "Public Broadcaster," the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, expressed her belief that the ruling party, Georgian Dream, has deteriorated to a point that surpasses the governance under former President Mikheil Saakashvili. According to Zurabishvili, the Georgian Dream party’s primary political adversary remains Saakashvili, whom they continually define as their central opponent.
The President further emphasized her concerns regarding the political and humanitarian issues surrounding Saakashvili, specifically referencing her multiple discussions with Minister of Justice Rati Bregadze. These conversations, she noted, were primarily focused on addressing Saakashvili’s health and humanitarian concerns. However, Zurabishvili made it clear that the matter should be considered a political issue, not one of pardon, as pardoning involves a moral dimension, to which she opposed.
Zurabishvili’s critique of the Georgian Dream regime extended beyond this context. She argued that the current government has become worse than Saakashvili’s era by adopting authoritarian tendencies, including one-party rule, electoral manipulation, violations of human rights, and the subjugation of business interests. She specifically noted that the government’s alignment with Russia had exacerbated these issues, drawing a stark comparison to Saakashvili’s period, which, according to the President, lacked such external influence.
