
First Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Romeo Mikautadze met with the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Tatiana Molchan. The meeting was held in Geneva, Switzerland, within the framework of the 32nd session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy organized by the UNECE.
Ambassador Aleksandre Maisuradze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, also attended the meeting.
The productive cooperation of Georgia with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in the direction of sustainable energy was discussed at the meeting. It was noted that cooperation will continue on such important issues as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening sustainable energy systems, improving energy efficiency, digitalization of the sector, etc. Special emphasis was placed on cooperation in the direction of strengthening energy security.
Romeo Mikautadze introduced the current trends in the energy sector of Georgia to the Executive Secretary of UNECE, as well as provided information about current and planned energy infrastructure projects and other priority directions. Special emphasis was placed on the special importance of the Black Sea submarine cable project both in the direction of diversifying the supply of energy resources in Europe, as well as in the direction of increasing energy security in Georgia and the South Caucasus as a whole, and stimulating the development of green energy in the region.
The meeting also focused on the digitization of the energy sector and the importance of using modern technologies, which will contribute to the strengthening of capacities among the UNECE member countries and the removal of barriers to access to data and information on sustainable energy systems.
