A high-level parliamentary delegation from Georgia is currently visiting the People’s Republic of China to hold a series of strategic meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, according to the ruling Georgian Dream party.
During the visit, Georgian officials have engaged in wide-ranging, high-level discussions with key representatives of the Chinese Communist Party, the National People’s Congress, the Center for Language and Education Cooperation (CLEC), the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Technical Equipment (CCTIP), the Shenzhen Municipal Government, and leading Chinese technology companies.
The visit highlights Georgia’s growing role as a critical transit hub within the transcontinental Middle Corridor—an increasingly vital transport route linking Europe and Asia. Since 2022, the strategic significance of this corridor has expanded notably, with a reported 30% surge in cargo throughput.
Georgia’s strategic position is gaining global recognition, supported by the European Union’s emphasis on regional connectivity and cooperation. For China, bolstering ties with Georgia forms part of a broader initiative to diversify trade routes to European markets, especially given geopolitical disruptions affecting traditional northern corridors.
The key objectives of the visit include reinforcing inter-party collaboration and expanding the China-Georgia strategic partnership in fields such as education, agriculture, and economic development. These efforts aim to support Georgia’s socio-economic progress while further positioning the country as a vital link between East and West.
Giorgi Volski, Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament and a member of the delegation, emphasized the transformative role of the Middle Corridor:
“The importance of the Middle Corridor has long been recognised, but today it is critical for both East and West. Connecting these markets is impossible without this corridor. Georgia’s geopolitical location aligns with the demands of the modern Silk Road initiative, and the transformations taking place through Georgia will have a direct and positive impact on the economic and social well-being of our citizens.”
With access to a market of 2.3 billion consumers through multiple free trade agreements, Georgia is positioning itself as a pivotal player in the evolving landscape of Eurasian trade.
