The Georgian Defense Forces will receive NATO-standard armoured personnel carriers after the Defense Ministry and Turkish company ASFAT on Friday signed a deal for the hardware, - the Ministry of Defense of Georgia announced.
“The deal on the vehicles made with the company operating under the Ministry of National Defense of Turkey will significantly contribute to the strengthening of [Georgia’s] defense capabilities and productive cooperation between the two countries,” - the Georgian Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze said.
While pointing to the increase of GEL80 million ($28 million) in budget funding for the ministry, Minister Juansher Burchuladze said last month the money would be used for the implementation of medium- and long-term projects with support of foreign partners.
Juansher Burchuladze said the country was already producing ammunition, while the domestic production of armoured vests and helmets had been expanded and 40 locally produced armoured vehicles had been handed to the Georgian Defense Forces.
As he noted, the Ministry had plans to purchase anti-aircraft, anti-tank and anti-armour systems.
