While approaching the season, blueberries became cheaper in Georgia. According to Tornike Panjavidze, head of the Blueberry Producers Association, the average price of 1 kilogram is $4-5. According to him, the price will drop to $2-3 in the coming weeks.
This week, members of the association will export 44 tons of blueberries to Germany, which will be sold in REWE and Edeka group supermarkets.
Panjavidze hopes to get valuable information on the export processes in order to better prepare for the next year. He says one of the problems faced by Georgians during export is the absence of a pesticide testing laboratory in Georgia, which is why Georgian farmers have to send samples by mail, which requires a lot of time.
Panjavidze talks about the need to solve this issue and considers two possible options: creation of a European laboratory in Georgia or holding negotiations with the postal company about giving the priority to the transportation of blueberry samples.
