
The Georgian airports regained 69.33% of passenger traffic compared to the post-pandemic rate. According to the information requested by AviaNews from the Civil Aviation Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, in January-May 2022, the Georgian airports served a total of 1,327,719 passengers with regular and irregular flights, which is almost 3 times more than the rate observed in January-May 2021.
In January-May 2021, the country's airports served a total of 361,177 passengers, 719,295 passengers - in January-May 2020, and 1,914,974 passengers - within 5 months of 2019. Accordingly, in January-May 2022, compared to the same period of 2019, there was a 30.67% decrease in passenger traffic at the Georgian international airports, an increase of 84.59% compared to the same period of 2020, and a 267.61% increase compared to the same period of 2021.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and flights suspended in Ukraine due to the hostilities have already had some impact on and will be more sharply reflected in Georgia's overall passenger flow. Authorities in Ukraine have announced that they have closed their airspace to civilian flights since 22 February. The loss of the Ukrainian market will have a more pronounced impact on the tourist flow of Georgia during the summer season.
According to the data of January-May 2022, the Tbilisi International Airport served 916,016 passengers, which is 215.67% more than the number of passengers carried within the five months of 2021.
