An influential British publication, The Economist, writes that the world is entering a rice crisis. Global rice demad is soaring. Yet yields are stagnating. The land, water and labour that rice production requires are becoming scarcer. Climate change is a graver threat.
According to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), in 2022, 11.36 thousand tons of rice were imported into Georgia, the value of which was 8.95 million US dollars. It is noteworthy that the amount paid for imports last year reached a peak level. In February 2022, compared to the corresponding period of last year, the price of rice in the country increased by 8.6%.
The list of Georgia's largest trading partners by rice imports is as follows:
India - $5.6 million;
Pakistan - $3 million;
Russia - $580.9 thousand;
Kazakhstan - $441.4 thousand;
Thailand - $318 thousand.
