Maka Bochorishvili, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, discussed the current state of Georgia-U.S. relations in an interview on the Night Courier program.
Bochorishvili attributed the U.S. decision to suspend its partnership with Georgia to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that she hopes for the restoration of bilateral ties, as the partnership’s foundational content remains intact.
She noted that the shift in relations is linked to the war in Ukraine and broader regional tensions. Bochorishvili also referred to the newly elected U.S. president’s stance on urgently addressing the conflict, pointing to his efforts with both Ukraine and Russia. She expressed optimism that the issue will soon become more prominent on the international agenda, potentially leading to a diplomatic resolution.
While acknowledging that the U.S. president may not prioritize Georgia immediately upon taking office, Bochorishvili remained confident that the relationship would improve in the coming months. She stressed that Georgia's strategic importance to the U.S. remained unchanged, underscoring that the previous partnership was based on tangible reasons.
Finally, Bochorishvili reiterated the importance of ensuring that partnerships with strategic allies were meaningful and substantive. She expressed her desire to make Georgia’s relations with the U.S. truly strategic, with content that went beyond mere formalities.
