“Georgia has resumed wheat import in small quantities,” - Levan Silagava, Executive Director of the Georgian Wheat and Flour Producers Association, stated. According to him, after a pause of several months, a positive trend has been observed in the market.
"Harvest season will end soon in Georgia. Part of the harvest was stored by the farmers and is not sold. Traditionally, they expect a better price after the season. Part of the harvest was bought by the mills and it is being processed. We are talking about small mills located in the same area, where the cornfields are - the so-called seasonal mills in Kakheti, Shida Kartli and Kvemo Kartli.
Large, industrial mills continue to operate on a limited basis. They are mainly switched to the import of flour. However, some of them are still importing wheat. Georgia has resumed wheat import in small quantities, because beneficial changes have started in the world wheat market", - said Levan Silagava.
According to him, all large mills are still stopped. Only a small number of medium capacity mills and small mills is processing the local crop.
