“It is shameful when anyone accuses Georgia of lying about matters related to Ukraine,” said Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili in a statement to journalists. She emphasized that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Georgia has consistently shown political support for Ukraine and that Kyiv can always rely on Tbilisi’s backing.
According to Botchorishvili, no one can legitimately claim that Georgia has failed to support Ukraine in any international forums. “The conclusions presented in the European Commission’s report are completely disconnected from reality,” she said. “Georgia’s position on Ukraine has been clear and unwavering. Every EU member state and NATO ally shares a similar approach — no one seeks confrontation with Russia or additional security risks. The government’s foremost responsibility is to safeguard the country, and fulfilling this duty should be recognized, not condemned.”
The Foreign Minister also addressed what she described as obstructive actions by the Ukrainian government during Georgia’s process of European integration. She noted that Ukraine, not being an EU member, has no formal role in Georgia’s EU candidacy.
“Georgia’s path toward EU membership and the process of obtaining candidate status were accompanied by a negative stance from Ukraine, which argued that Georgia should not be granted candidate status,” Botchorishvili stated. “We witnessed the nature of the campaigns in 2022 and 2023 prior to our candidate status being approved. Ukraine’s involvement was evident — they opposed Georgia’s European integration through various means. This was not hidden; everyone saw it. Ukraine is not an EU member and therefore cannot influence Georgia’s European integration process,” she concluded.
