“We have consistently emphasized that, despite the hostile policies currently pursued by the Ukrainian government toward the Georgian people, Georgia remains committed to supporting the Ukrainian nation,” stated Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili.
Papuashvili explained that Georgia has actively supported Ukraine from the very first day of the conflict.
“What may surprise some is that, despite the ingratitude shown by the Ukrainian government—and specifically by President Zelenskyy—toward the Georgian people, Georgia continues to back Ukraine. For us, President Zelenskyy’s actions do not define our support; our focus is on standing with the Ukrainian people during this challenging time.”
He added that Georgia’s decisions are guided by national interest and broader principles, not by a desire to appease any foreign power. “We are acting in ways that protect our core priorities. We refuse to be used as a tool to escalate conflict around Russia, just as Ukraine should not be manipulated as a pawn against Russia,” Papuashvili said.
The Speaker noted that even the U.S. Secretary of State has referred to the conflict in Ukraine as a ‘puppet war.’ He elaborated: “Some parties expected us to become instruments in such a conflict, but following Ukraine’s example, that would be disastrous. Without access to Russia’s sovereign assets, what is their alternative? As the Belgian Prime Minister recently highlighted, seizing assets like those of fascist Germany during World War II is virtually impossible. Their lack of a Plan B is the real problem.”
Papuashvili also addressed domestic criticism: “Some in Georgia who display foreign allegiances fail to understand our approach. They believe Georgia should symbolically raise the Ukrainian flag, but our actions are based on principle, not symbolism. We support the Ukrainian people despite President Zelenskyy’s hostile policies toward Georgia and the personal ingratitude he has shown through various decisions.”
