Sunflower oil imports to Georgia have experienced significant growth. According to data from Geostat, during the first 11 months of 2024 (11M24), Georgia imported 41,607 tons of sunflower oil valued at USD 44.5 million, surpassing the figures for the same period in 2023 in both quantity and value.
Compared to the corresponding period in 2023, when 36,967 tons of sunflower oil worth USD 39.9 million were imported, the value of imports increased by 11.6%, and the quantity rose by 12.6%.
Russia remains the primary supplier of sunflower oil to Georgia, accounting for 87% of total imports. The top five exporting countries to Georgia during 11M24 are as follows:
- Russia: USD 37.6 million, 36,315 tons
- Ukraine: USD 5.1 million, 3,943 tons
- Azerbaijan: USD 1.4 million, 1,065 tons
- Hungary: USD 295.7 thousand, 158 tons
- Turkey: USD 121.1 thousand, 88.5 tons
Decline in Sunflower Oil Exports from Georgia
In contrast, exports of sunflower oil from Georgia have decreased significantly. During the January-November 2024 period, Georgia exported only 10 tons of sunflower oil worth USD 35.6 thousand, a sharp decline from the 1,637 tons worth USD 1.7 million exported during the same period in 2023.
The United States emerged as the leading export market for Georgian sunflower oil in 2024, followed by Russia, Germany, and the Czech Republic. The breakdown of exports by country is as follows:
- United States: USD 19 thousand, 6.5 tons
- Russia: USD 7.9 thousand, 1.6 tons
- Germany: USD 4 thousand, 0.97 tons
- Czech Republic: USD 2.2 thousand, 0.57 tons
This data highlights contrasting trends in the sunflower oil trade, with significant growth in imports and a notable decline in exports.
