The world is undergoing major geopolitical and economic shifts, reshaping global supply chains and increasing the importance of safe, predictable, and reliable transport routes, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at the official inauguration of Georgian Railway’s modernization project. He emphasized that Georgia’s role in this changing environment must be carefully planned and strengthened through strategic decisions.
According to the Prime Minister, Georgia’s long-term future lies in developing an intermodal transit function that integrates all modes of transport into a single, cohesive ecosystem.
“The Middle Corridor is not just an alternative route—it represents a new standard for connectivity between Europe and Asia,” Kobakhidze said. “Our objective is for Georgia to become a key, reliable, and indispensable link in this corridor, ensuring the fast, safe, and uninterrupted movement of cargo.”
He noted that the railway modernization project is a crucial part of this vision, enhancing Georgia’s competitiveness, expanding its transit potential, and laying a strong foundation to accommodate growing trade flows between Europe and Asia in the coming years. The government’s ultimate goal, he added, is to establish the Middle Corridor as the region’s most reliable, secure, and efficient transport route.
Georgian Railway has now completed the modernization project, which was officially inaugurated in Kvishkheti village at the eastern portal of an 8,300-meter-long tunnel.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Kobakhidze, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili, other Cabinet members, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
