According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the current situation and challenges in Georgia created in terms of water metering, one of the components of the program, were discussed in detail at the meeting. The meeting participants considered how to identify the needs and reveal the priorities the future activities of the project will be planned for.
As noted at the meeting, in recent years, as a result of the EU-supported projects, Georgia has begun to implement large-scale reforms in the field of water resources management. Within the framework of the EU-funded European Union Water Initiative Plus for Eastern Partnership (EUWI+) program, a draft law on water resources management has been developed, which has already been submitted to the Parliament and the committee discussions are actively underway.
The regional program "EU4Environment – Water Resources and Environmental Data" is being implemented in seven countries (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine) with the aim of improving human well-being in the EU's Eastern Partnership countries and promoting the possibility of green transformation of these countries in accordance with the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program includes two main areas - support for sustainable use of water resources and the use of reliable environmental statistics by partner countries.
The program, with a budget of 12.75 million euros, is to be implemented in 2021-2024. The implementing partners of the program "EU4Environment – Water Resources and Environmental Data" are the Environment Agency Austria (UBA), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the International Office for Water (OIEau) (France), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The official meeting was attended by the representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, parties involved in the program and experts.
