The Government of Georgia has announced an international construction tender worth 876 million GEL for a new 70,000-seat stadium to be built on a 270,615-square-meter site along Kakheti Highway, near the Tbilisi International Airport turnoff.
According to the State Procurement Agency, the stadium's proximity to the current airport — just 1,500 meters from the runway — places it within the airport’s security zone, requiring an assessment of its impact on air traffic, including lighting, drones, fireworks, and other potential disruptions.
However, the need for these assessments may change. The government plans to relocate the airport to Vaziani, where the stadium would sit about 7,500–7,800 meters from the new runway. While this would move the stadium out of direct proximity, the aeronautical impact on flight paths and navigation systems will still need to be evaluated through a separate aviation study.
Tender proposals must be submitted by September 29, with the evaluation and selection process expected to take several months. The winning bidder will have 51 months (4 years and 3 months) to complete the project, likely placing completion between 2029 and 2030. Depending on the pace of the airport relocation, any operational overlap between the stadium and Tbilisi International Airport may be brief.
