
Exports of electricity from Georgia have increased to a record. Based on the preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia, in January-September 2022, the country sold electricity worth of $84,338 million, which is 467.9% more than the revenues recorded in the same period of the previous year.
Last year, during the reporting period, the revenues from electricity export amounted to $14,851 million. Accordingly, this year, electricity has been among the top ten exports of local products for three months. In January-September, the share of electricity in the total domestic export was 3%.
It should be noted that such a large volume of electricity has not been exported from Georgia for years. For information, the data of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT) on the volume of electricity sold by the country has been available on the external trade portal of the GEOSTAT since 2014.
As for Georgia’s major trading partner countries for exports, in nine months of 2022, Georgia sold the largest amount of electricity - worth of $79,553 million - to Turkey, Armenia ranked 2nd with the revenue of $4,215 million, and Azerbaijan ranked 3rd with the revenue of $569.7 thousand. Georgia has sold electricity worth of $0.97 thousand to Russia this year.
In addition, according to the GEOSTAT data, this year Georgia has purchased (mainly, in winter and spring) electricity worth of only $34,745 million.
