Georgia has resumed car exports to Syria for the first time since 2018, marking a potential new direction for the country’s growing vehicle re-export sector. In the first four months of 2025, Georgia exported 70 cars to Syria worth $594,000 — a significant increase compared to just 4 cars re-exported in 2018.
Alexey Noniadze, founder of the Georgian Association of Auto Importers, called Syria “an interesting market” and suggested it could serve as an alternative export destination. “However, it is necessary to conduct relevant research and understand what is in demand in Syria and how profitable this market will be for Georgian dealers,” he noted.
Overall, Georgia remains among the world’s top ten car re-exporting countries. From January to April 2025, the total value of Georgia’s car re-exports reached $754 million — a 31% increase year-on-year. The largest markets were Kyrgyzstan ($408 million), Kazakhstan ($219 million), and Azerbaijan.
On the import side, Georgia brought in 55,000 passenger cars worth about $966 million during the same period. This represents a 10% increase in value and a 6% drop in quantity. The United States remains Georgia’s primary import source, accounting for 90% of all car imports, followed by Germany and Japan.
