The memorandum signed between Georgia and China on developing the Air Silk Road will strengthen cooperation in civil aviation and positively influence tourism and related sectors, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Tamar Ioseliani announced. The agreement was formalized during Georgia’s state visit to China and signed by Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili.
Ioseliani noted that an additional memorandum was concluded between Georgia’s Civil Aviation Agency and China’s Civil Aviation Administration. The document aims to deepen collaboration based on liberal aviation principles. Both sides highlighted the growing volume of cargo transportation and agreed to continue working together to further expand cargo air traffic.
According to the Deputy Minister, these developments were made possible by the broader strategic cooperation agreement recently signed between Georgia and China.
“We are very optimistic that in the near future, the number of routes and flight frequencies with China will increase, which will directly contribute to higher passenger traffic,” Ioseliani said.
Currently, two Chinese carriers—China Southern Airlines and Air China—operate regular passenger flights on the Urumqi–Tbilisi–Urumqi route, offering a total of five flights per week. In the first ten months of this year, 88,627 passengers traveled between Georgia and China, an 81% increase compared to the same period last year.
