The railway authorities of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen freight transportation along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway corridor.
The agreement was formalized during a trilateral meeting held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on the sidelines of Transport Week. Participants included Lasha Abashidze, General Director of Georgian Railways, Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), and Ufuk Yalçın, General Director of Turkish State Railways' freight arm, TCDD Taşımaçılık.
The MoU outlines a joint commitment to improving the competitiveness of the BTK corridor in comparison to alternative transport routes. This includes optimizing delivery times, offering competitive and transparent tariffs, and creating favorable and stable conditions for cargo transport.
A key focus of the agreement is to establish a predictable and reliable operational regime along the BTK route, enhancing services for cargo owners and ultimately increasing freight volumes. Meeting delivery deadlines was highlighted as essential to maintaining and growing the corridor’s appeal to international shippers.
By improving coordination and logistics between the three countries, the BTK railway is expected to play a greater role in regional connectivity and serve as a vital link for trade between Europe and Asia.
