Georgian Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili highlighted the successful alignment of economic forecasts between Georgia's Ministry of Finance and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during a joint briefing with the IMF mission chief and the President of the National Bank of Georgia.
Minister Khutsishvili noted that the IMF mission to Georgia was highly productive, with both parties reviewing current economic and fiscal policy trends and forecasts. He emphasized the importance of this cooperation, stating that through close collaboration with the IMF, Georgia continuously monitors economic trends and adjusts fiscal and monetary policies accordingly.
The Finance Minister reported that key fiscal and macroeconomic indicators are closely aligned with IMF assessments. Economic growth has increased to 7.2%, surpassing the earlier projection of 6%. The budget deficit stands at approximately 2.4-2.5%, in line with IMF forecasts. Government debt has decreased to 36%, well below Georgia’s safe debt threshold, with expectations to maintain this level and continue a downward trend within the projected range of 34-36%.
Minister Khutsishvili also highlighted the successful outcomes of Georgia’s fiscal policy, noting that the country's fiscal position is significant and favorable under conditions of global economic uncertainty. He emphasized that all fiscal parameters are healthy and sustainable, with the ability to respond appropriately to challenges.
The Finance Minister discussed ongoing reforms, particularly the restructuring of state-owned enterprises, which remains a priority and is advancing actively. Notably, the IMF’s recent assessment acknowledged tangible results in this area. The IMF mission confirmed their commitment and readiness to support the continuation of these vital reforms, emphasizing that this is a long-term process rather than a one-year effort.
Minister Khutsishvili expressed gratitude to the IMF mission, the Ministry of Finance, the National Bank, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, and various agencies for their fruitful work conducted during the Article IV consultations.
