90 years have passed since the establishment of the Evgeny Kharadze Abastumani National Astrophysical Observatory located on Mount Kanobili, near the Abastumani resort in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southeastern Georgia. On the occasion of the mentioned date, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Nunu Mickiewicz took part in the event held in Abastumani and personally congratulated the staff and scientists of the observatory on their anniversary.
Nunu Mickiewicz addressed the audience and spoke about the role of the observatory in the development of the Georgian science and the promotion of astronomy-astrophysics.
As the Deputy Minister noted, with the support of the Ministry, a number of infrastructure and scientific projects are being implemented to help the observatory and the development of astrophysics, which include the rehabilitation of the building and the renewal of the scientific research base. According to Nunu Mickiewicz, the improved infrastructure and environment of modern standards will enable scientists to be more actively involved in both regional and international grant competitions.
To celebrate the anniversary, an exhibition of posters depicting scientific activities was organized in the renovated space of the observatory. Scientists made presentations on astronomical-astrophysical events, while students from the observatory partner universities introduced their inventions to the public. The events were held in a hybrid format, which allowed Georgian scientists working abroad to participate in the meetings.
Representatives of local self-government and higher education institutions, students and schoolchildren participated in the anniversary event.
Since 2019, fundamental changes have been implemented at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory. The building of the big telescope AZT-11 was completely rehabilitated and the exhibition and work spaces and the library were renovated. Work is underway to improve infrastructure and equip the building. A new modern telescope at the base of the observatory is being installed, which, with its equipment, will be the best in the region. In total, the Georgian government has allocated GEL 10 million for the infrastructure development of the observatory. In 2022, the scale of the scientific and research institution expanded. In particular, the Tbilisi office corresponding to modern standards has been added to the observatory.
