On the 17th anniversary of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, France reiterated its unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. In a statement released by the Embassy of France in Georgia, the French Foreign Ministry called on Russia to fully implement the commitments it undertook in the ceasefire agreements of August 12 and September 8, 2008.

“Seventeen years after the Russian aggression in Georgia, France reaffirms its full commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement reads. It condemned the unilateral recognition of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, their militarization, and the restrictions imposed on their interaction with the rest of Georgia, describing them as “unacceptable violations of international law.”

France also underscored its continued support for the Geneva International Discussions (GID), co-chaired by the EU, OSCE, and UN, emphasizing their role as the only legitimate platform for resolving the conflict.

In addition, France expressed strong backing for the efforts of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) and the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Georgia’s sovereignty, its democratic aspirations, and its path toward European integration.
