A study will be conducted for the economic substantiation of a high-voltage transmission cable and fiber-optic internet cable on the seabed of the Black Sea. The research is commissioned by the state electricity system and financed by the World Bank; the information about it was published on the World Bank website.
If the project is implemented, the 1,195-kilometer cable will have to be connected to Romania. Additionally, according to the World Bank website, a preliminary assessment of the project has already been conducted, as per which, the existence of such an interconnection will have a positive impact on the energy system and economy of both Romania and the South Caucasus.
The contractor selected as a result of the tender - Centro Elettrotecnico Sperimentale Italiano – has to conduct a feasibility study for GEL 8,951,059 on the possible amount of the budget to build these cables, do economic and energy analysis and prepare a strategy plan for the project implementation and procurement.
The study will be funded by the World Bank.
To be reminded, the Georgian government last made a statement about the construction of the new cable a year ago. The then-Minister of Economy Natia Turnava said that the project of building a new cable on the seabed of the Black Sea was one of the priorities.
The budget for the construction of a high-voltage transmission line and a new fiber-optic cable will most likely be several hundred million euros.
