Maersk has launched a new rail-sea service from China via Europe via Georgia, connecting Asia and Europe via Central Asia. The train from various locations in China connects to Europe in about 40 days passing through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Romania.
Irakli Danelia, the Head of Business Development at Maersk in the Black Sea Region, told the Business Partner program that the opportunity was truly unique and unprecedented in the case of Georgia.
"Cargo is transported from any major Chinese city by intercontinental rail transport, via Kazakhstan, Caspian, Azerbaijan and Georgia, already using the Black Sea to connect with the rest of Europe. One month ago, we launched the first block train from China to Germany, the second one will soon approach the European borders and we are planning to make this direction as intensive as possible. The uniqueness of the route lies in the fact that Georgia actually has an exclusive position in intercontinental transport.
Our goal is for the Georgian side to get the highest possible benefit from this international, global shipment. I take all the logistical additional values into account that can be planned in the shipping process, making this value remain in the country and be reflected in the macroeconomic indicators," - Irakli Danelia said.
As Danelia explains, the project was planned even before the Russia-Ukraine war, but the economic and geopolitical situation in the region had its results and accelerated the processes.
"The maximum transit time on this route includes from 60 days to 40 days. The global supply chain is a field where time is literally money and, therefore, every hour is of a significant importance in the shipping process," - the Head of Business Development at Maersk in the Black Sea Region stated.
