The European Parliament has stated that Georgia cannot join the European Union unless its government reverses what it describes as an authoritarian shift. "The European Parliament stands with the Georgian people," the statement emphasized.
According to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), last year’s elections—described as rigged—marked a major turning point, signaling a departure from the country’s decades-long progress toward democracy.
MEPs accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of undermining state institutions, passing repressive laws, silencing opposition, rejecting EU integration, and moving closer to Russia.
The Parliament stressed that free and fair elections are essential. Until such elections are held, it said, it does not recognize Georgia’s current government and considers the country’s EU membership path effectively on hold.
