According to a new Eurobarometer survey, 46% of EU citizens support Georgia’s EU membership if it meets all criteria, while 43% are opposed. The findings were unveiled during an informal EU ministers' meeting in Copenhagen focused on enlargement.
Support varies widely across member states. Sweden (71%), Lithuania and Latvia (62%), and Denmark (61%) show the highest backing, while opposition is strongest in Austria (64%), the Czech Republic (61%), and Germany (53%).
Overall, 56% of EU citizens favor further enlargement.
In candidate countries, Georgia leads in support for EU membership, with 74% backing accession—higher than Ukraine’s 68%. The survey also found 43% of Georgians and 49% of Ukrainians view the EU positively.
The study, commissioned by the European Commission, included over 26,300 interviews across the EU and 9,000 in candidate countries, conducted from February to June 2025.
