First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili expressed optimism about the future of Georgia–U.S. relations during an interview on Imedi TV, stating that current conditions are favorable for improving ties and advancing strategic cooperation.
“I believe there are encouraging conditions for improving the situation and elevating the currently low level of relations between Georgia and the United States. This opens a new realm of opportunities,” Davitashvili said, highlighting an emerging ideological alignment with the new U.S. administration.
While shared democratic values remain a strong foundation, Davitashvili stressed the need for concrete, mutually beneficial initiatives to drive meaningful progress. He acknowledged the new U.S. administration's focus on foreign engagement that serves the interests of American citizens and emphasized Georgia’s readiness to align its cooperation accordingly.
Davitashvili addressed lingering tensions stemming from sanctions imposed on Georgian officials by the previous U.S. administration, describing them as a complicated legacy that would require legal and diplomatic resolution over time. However, he welcomed the constructive tone of recent White House meetings, calling them “open, sincere, and beneficial.”
Key messages included:
A shared desire on both sides to move toward a more productive and practical partnership.
Recognition that restoring strained relations is more challenging than maintaining strong ones, but still feasible through dialogue.
Rejection of opposition narratives that misrepresent the U.S. administration’s position, with Davitashvili reaffirming American respect for Georgia’s sovereignty and decision-making.
He also cautioned that broader geopolitical realignments, both in the U.S. and globally, mean progress will take time. Still, he underscored the Georgian government’s consistent policy line and clear interest in revitalizing ties with the United States.
“We aim for a more productive and tangible partnership with America... Discussions focused on how to transform the paused strategic cooperation into a results-driven partnership,” Davitashvili said.
Concluding on a hopeful note, he expressed confidence that ongoing high-level engagement would lead to the resolution of existing challenges and fulfillment of shared goals:
“With ongoing intensive communication, all the tasks we have jointly set can be accomplished.”
