“Development of green energy in Georgia, reform of the electric energy market, encouragement of production and use of energy from renewable sources, energy efficiency,” - these and other priority issues were emphasized by the First Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Romeo Mikautadze, during his speech at the 12th meeting of the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee.
Permanent delegations of the Parliament of Georgia and the European Parliament, as well as representatives of the executive structures of Georgia took part in the session. Among the speakers were First Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Romeo Mikautadze and Deputy Minister Genadi Arveladze.
"Georgia's energy sector is in an active phase of development. Our goal is to make full and effective use of the huge unused potential of renewable energy in order to increase the country's energy security. With the support of donor organizations, a new renewable energy support scheme was developed and approved, which provides for the arrangement of auctions of the capacity of renewable energy sources in order to attract investors, as well as the development of non-traditional sources, such as: hydrogen, biogas, biomass, geothermal energies, etc.
The proposed scheme facilitates negotiations and cooperation with financial institutions, which helps potential investors to raise financing, which is vital for the implementation of renewable energy projects in our country. We also developed drafts of the state energy policy and its annex - the National Energy and Climate Plan. This document envisages the achievement of the target indicators of 2030, both in the final consumption of renewable energy, and for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions.
Given Georgia's strategic location, we see its role as a green energy development hub in the region. In this regard, the appropriate infrastructure to ensure the transportation of green energy from our region to Europe should be strengthened and developed. One such infrastructure project is the Black Sea submarine cable project, which will contribute to the energy security of the European Union and the Caucasus region. The Black Sea cable not only diversifies supply routes, but also reduces supply risks and has a great potential for additional income for Georgia," - Romeo Mikautadze said.
