According to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), in 7 months of 2022, the cost of purchasing coal for importers was slightly more than $17 million, which is 115.2% more than the figure ($7.9 million) recorded last year.
Although the price of imported raw materials has increased, the quantity has decreased, which indicates its increase in price - 86.1 thousand tons of coal were imported to Georgia this year, which is 9.1% less than the figure (94.7 tons) recorded last year.
As for local export, in 7 months of this year, coal (61.7 tons) worth of only $21.6 thousand was exported from Georgia, while in the same period last year, this indicator was $4.96 thousand (32 tons).
According to the statistics, the main importer of coal to the country is Russia, with more than 90% of imports. Then comes Turkey, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan with a slight share.
Rising coal prices are associated with the increased demand for the resource globally - after the invasion of Ukraine, Russia reduced the supply of gas to Europe, and the European countries are planning to gradually replace the Russian energy resources. Against the background of the energy crisis caused by the war and the record increase in energy prices, the suspended coal-fired power plants are being brought back to the continent, which dramatically increases the demand for the resource and, accordingly, the price.
