As of the first 11 months of 2024, Georgia experienced contrasting trends in the import of salmon (red) and sturgeon (black) caviar. According to data from Geostat, imports of red caviar increased significantly, while imports of black caviar declined sharply.
Sturgeon (Black) Caviar
Between January and November 2024, Georgia imported 0.14 tons of sturgeon caviar valued at $89,370. This represents a 50% decrease in value and an 88% decline in quantity compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, no sturgeon caviar was imported from Russia or China in 2024, unlike the previous year. The primary importing countries during this period were:
- France: $40,890
- Italy: $39,190
- Latvia: $9,300
Salmon (Red) Caviar
In contrast, imports of red caviar and its substitutes showed substantial growth. Georgia imported 115 tons of red caviar worth $1.4 million between January and November 2024, reflecting an 18% increase in value and a 31% rise in quantity compared to the same period in 2023.
Russia emerged as the dominant supplier, with imports from the country increasing by 181% in quantity compared to the previous year. The breakdown of red caviar imports by country is as follows:
- Russia: $890,090 (62 tons)
- China: $239,100 (12 tons)
- Belarus: $181,080 (37 tons)
- Poland: $38,340 (2 tons)
- Latvia: $26,390 (0.19 tons)
Smaller quantities of red caviar were also imported from:
- Finland: $11,530
- Ukraine: $5,900
- Germany: $5,360
These trends highlight a shift in Georgia’s import patterns, with growing demand for red caviar and declining reliance on sturgeon caviar, particularly from traditional suppliers such as Russia and China.
