Approximately $6 billion has been invested in capital expenditures for the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline project since it began operations in June 2006 through the end of 2024, according to Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, BP's Vice President for the Caspian region.
In a recent social media post, Aslanbayli reported that the pipeline has transported around 591 million tons of crude oil—equivalent to over 4.4 billion barrels. This volume has been shipped globally via 5,862 tankers loaded at the Ceyhan terminal in Turkey.
Stretching 1,768 kilometers, the BTC pipeline plays a strategic role in regional energy exports. It primarily carries crude oil from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field and condensate from the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan. The pipeline also transports crude and condensate from other Caspian region sources, including Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and additional production by Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR.
