Blueberry remains the main crop of Georgian agricultural business.
Compared to previous years, investments in perennial gardens have doubled in 2022. Last year, the total investment amounted to 64 million GEL (22 million US dollars), and almost half of this amount was co-financed by the garden component of the Georgian state program "Plant the Future". The program aims to modernize local agriculture and increase local production through financial incentives for Georgian farmers.
The most popular crops for investment in 2022 were blueberries, almonds, olives, laurel and apples.
Investments in apple orchards in 2022 were 81% higher than the 2015-2022 average. In 2022, investment in all other top crops was at least 115% above the eight-year average.
It is expected that from 2015, income from farms created under the state program will increase for all product groups. The berry group, dominated by blueberries, is expected to generate $10 million in revenue in 2023.
Although this figure is lower ($19 million) than that of nuts and vegetables ($17 million), it is very likely that by 2027, berries will bring in the largest annual revenue, and this number will be around $62 million.
