Railway service between Azerbaijan and Georgia is set to resume in late May, coinciding with both countries’ national celebrations.
According to Azerbaijani media, the two countries have agreed that the first train will begin operations to mark Georgia’s Independence Day on 26 May and Azerbaijan’s Republic Day on 28 May.
The sides are still discussing several details, including tariffs. Reports indicate that Georgian Railways has established one-way ticket prices and sent a tariff grid to their Azerbaijani partners.
At this stage, Georgia is proposing to sell compartment tickets for 50 GEL (30.97 Azerbaijani Manat) and sleeper cabin tickets for 70 GEL (43.35 Manat). The Azerbaijani side has yet to announce price plans.
Railway service between Baku and Tbilisi was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has not resumed to date. Azerbaijan’s land borders with neighboring countries, including Georgia, also remain closed. The country continues to operate under a special quarantine regime that is due to expire on 1 July 2025.
