
The Smokey Bear wildfire prevention campaign aiming to raise the level of awareness of preschool and school-aged youth and preserve biodiversity, is implemented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
The Smokey Bear campaign was introduced to the Georgian specialists by representatives of the US Forestry Service. Karlo Amirgulashvili, the Head of Biodiversity and Forest policy Department of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, noted at the meeting that raising the awareness of young people is an important component in fire prevention.
"We would like to express our gratitude to the US Forest Service for the opportunity to implement the Smokey Bear campaign in Georgia. It is important for us to properly conduct forest fire prevention together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Our rangers and foresters are required to participate in the relevant measures at the fire sites, therefore we have a very big role, including in the prevention part; The more education we and our young generation have, the more we will be able to take steps that will help preserve biodiversity," said Karlo Amirgulashvili.
At the meeting held in the Ministry, the American side was introduced to the fire prevention works in the wild nature of Georgia, the emergency management plan in relation to forest fires and the practice of forest fire management.
