The Batumi City Court has sentenced Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of the Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, to two years in prison. The sentence will begin on January 12, 2025, the day of her arrest.
Judge Nino Sakhelashvili delivered the verdict today, reclassifying the charges and convicting Amaglobeli under Article 353, Part 1, which pertains to resistance, threats, or violence against public order officers or other government representatives.
Amaglobeli was first detained by law enforcement on January 11 during a protest near the Batumi Police Headquarters on administrative grounds. She was released on a written pledge but later re-arrested on more serious charges of assaulting a police officer, which carried a possible sentence of 4 to 7 years imprisonment.
