The Trans-Caspian international transport route, i.e. the Middle Corridor, ТМТМ may become more competitive compared to the Northern Corridor, which is in the common interest of Georgia and Azerbaijan. Iain Rawlinson, the Chief Commercial Officer at APM Terminals Poti, stated this in an exclusive interview with Trend Agency.
As Iain Rawlinson stated, in order the Middle Corridor to become competitive, it must be highly efficient for transparent rail and sea transport links once the hostilities in Ukraine would end and the region would return to normalcy. Iain Rawlinson says there is still uncertainty surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the current impact of COVID-19, particularly in China, will continue to have a direct impact on the global supply chain.
According to Rawlinson, it is true that the Russian corridor between China and Europe is also effective, but certain difficulties arise during the movement of goods on the border between Belarus and Poland. APM Terminals closely cooperates with partners from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It also works with all major shipping lines to connect the port to the European ports in the countries such as Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
According to Iain Rawlinson, the throughput of the Middle Corridor is currently around 500-550,000 TEU per year, which is more than the last year's 300,000 TEU and is 60% of the total capacity.
APM Terminals is a port operating company headquartered in the Netherlands. The company is the transport and logistics division of the Danish shipping giant, Maersk.
