In the first 5 months of 2023, a record amount of electricity was exported from Georgia. Particularly, in January-May, the export volume amounted to 415.9 million kWh, and the received income was $29.9 million. Such high numbers have never been recorded in this period of the year.
For comparison, in the same period last year, the figures were 272.1 million kWh and $23.8 million.
Georgia's top trading partner by electricity imports is Turkey with 26.7 million US dollars, followed by Armenia with 3.1 million US dollars. The share of Azerbaijan and Russia is negligible.
As for imports, in the same period, 600.4 million kWh of electricity was imported into the country, which is 47.9% less than the figure of 1.2 billion kWh recorded in the same period last year.
The cost of imported electricity this year is significantly lower and amounts to 766.6 thousand US dollars, while last year it was 34.7 million US dollars.
Although almost twice as much electricity was imported last year, the difference in imported cost is still sharp. Roughly speaking, the cost of 1 MWh (1 MWh = 1000 kWh) of electricity is 1.3 USD this year, and it was 30.1 USD last year.
This year Georgia's top trading partner by electricity imports is still Russia, which gives a reason to assume that the electricity, as it happened in previous years, was imported into Abkhazia through Georgia.
