"85-90% of the Georgian wine export includes red wine," - the head of the National Wine Agency of Georgia stated while evaluating wine export indicators.
Levan Mekhuzla noted that despite the Russia-Ukraine war, the export figures are maintained. The high demand for red wine and low demand for white wine in the international markets affects the harvest process in the country, which is reflected in the government's subsidy provided for white grapes.
"Wine export is stable at this stage, despite the war, we maintain last year's figure, which I think, for objective reasons, is a good result. Although we want to see a double-digit growth, at this stage maintaining last year's exports is also a good indicator. 85-90% of the Georgian wine export includes red wine, which is also reflected in the vintage.
In recent years, grapes of the Saperavi variety have been planted without intervention from the state. White grapes, which are mainly used to make high-alcohol content brandy spirit, are unfortunately not in such demand. The war had a direct impact in this regard, as most of our brandy was tied to Ukraine. The Russian-Ukraine war had an impact on white grapes, and therefore we needed to subsidize them," - Levan Mekhuzla explained.
To be informed, in 8 months of 2022, the export of the Georgian wine increased by 1.2% and in total wine worth of $146.4 million was exported. It should be noted that during this period wine exports in the main export market of wine in Russia increased by 8.8%, while in Ukraine it decreased by 58.6%.
