33 years have passed since the outbreak of armed conflict in Abkhazia, which began on August 14, 1992, when Georgian forces entered the region to secure a key railway line.
The war lasted 13 months and 13 days, ending on September 27, 1993, with the fall of Sokhumi. This final phase followed negotiations involving both sides and Russian mediation.
On July 27, 1993, the Sochi Agreement was signed to halt hostilities. However, the Abkhaz side violated the agreement after Georgian forces had withdrawn their heavy weapons from the region.
The conflict had devastating consequences: around 300,000 people were displaced, and nearly 10,000 Georgians—including soldiers and civilians—lost their lives.
