"In September 2022, compared to the same period last year, a 10-15% decrease in Georgia’s export of fruits and vegetables is expected," - Vakhtang Bezhitashvili, chairman of the Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association of Georgia, said.
He explains the decline in exports is associated with geopolitical instability and that it is necessary to redirect the export of fruits and vegetables from the Russian direction to more stable and promising markets.
According to Vakhtang Bezhitashvili, the decrease in exports is connected with the current and expected instability due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
"This business is already associated with quite big risks, because the products are perishable and at this stage the expectations from this or that market are unstable. All this leads to a decrease in exports. We definitely need to diversify the markets so that our exports are not directed only to Russia. We have the potential in European countries. In this direction, the private sector should work together with the government," - Bezhitashvili said.
