“Azerbaijan is considering the project of creating the Zangezur corridor along with the possibility of investing in Georgian ports and is actively working on it,” - President Ilham Aliyev stated during an interview with the Chinese TV channel China Global Television Network.
According to the president, the implementation of the Zangezur corridor along with the operation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway route will create additional opportunities for increasing freight traffic.
"Cargoes will be transported through the sea ports of Georgia, and in this regard we are considering the possibilities of certain investments with great interest," Aliyev said.
According to Alayev, the construction works of the Zangezur corridor on the territory of Azerbaijan are almost 70% completed.
"We are working very actively on the Zangezur corridor, which will become an additional route from Azerbaijan to Turkey and Europe," the president said.
At the same time, Aliyev emphasizes that Azerbaijan does not want to be only a transit country, therefore it plans to create many new enterprises on the route of the transport corridors passing through it.
"We want to create large industrial zones in Azerbaijan and we are already moving in this direction," the president stated.
It might also be attractive to Chinese companies, who, according to Aliyev, will be able to set up production in the Alat Free Economic Zone (AFEZ) near Baku. The Alat Free Economic Zone was opened in June and is already functioning.
To be informed, the Zangezur transport corridor is an Azerbaijani project, the length of which is approximately 40 km, and it passes through Syunik province of Armenia. Azerbaijan views the corridor as a means of providing transport links between the country's western regions and its exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
