Kazakhstan plans to create external terminal networks in the ports of Georgia, Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The national company of Kazakhstan, the operator of the largest trunk railway network Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) will be transformed into a national transport and logistics company. As the Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Kairbek Uskenbayev announced at the government meeting, the cooperation with global transport and logistics companies and the creation of a terminal network outside the Republic of Kazakhstan are expected within the framework of the mentioned project.
As Paata Tsagareishvili, the Director of the Transport Corridor Research Center, said, until now Kazakhstan used the terminal network built through Russia, but due to the war, it had to find new ways.
"Until today, Kazakhstan had an active terminal network built in the ports of the Baltic coast. Kazakhstan had made significant investments to bring its own raw materials: coal, refined petroleum products and others to the European market with the help of the Baltic countries, but naturally it had to transport them through the Russian railway first. However, the situation has changed radically in the recent period; Russia categorically refused to transport its goods to Kazakhstan through its territory, that is, it found itself out of the game and began to look for new terminal locations. Iran, which is sanctioned, has a tense relationship with Azerbaijan, so Kazakhstan was looking for an updated option of terminal ways.
Kazakhstan realized this opportunity late, it failed to diversify the market in time and depended on Russia's influence. This innovation is absolutely acceptable to Georgia; it is economically attractive, it is necessary for the placement of investments, and most importantly, the creation of such a terminal network gives Georgia a good opportunity to handle infrastructure flows and becomes more realistic in terms of cargo attraction," - Paata Tsagareishvili explains.
Paata Tsagareishvili said that the difficulties in attracting and transporting cargo are more in the territory of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan than in the Georgian zone.
It is worth noting that, in addition to the creation of a terminal network, Kazakhstan plans to digitize transport corridors, and in order to strengthen the transit potential, projects will be implemented in terms of the construction and modernization of transport infrastructure.
