The import rate of poultry (both fresh and frozen) and eggs to Georgia has increased. In particular, according to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), in the first four months of this year, Georgia bought chicken meat worth of 24.323 million US dollars, which is almost 9.7 million US dollars more than the earnings received in the same period last year. In January-April 2021, the country imported the products worth of $ 14.644 million.
As for eggs, according to Geostat, in the first 4 months of 2022, the product worth of 1.552 million USD was imported to Georgia, compared to the amount - 175.3 thousand USD - in the same period last year.
At the same time, the largest number of eggs was imported to Georgia from Turkey – amounting to 772.3 thousand US dollars, followed by Hungary – amounting to 606.4 thousand US dollars, Bulgaria - amounting to 135 thousand US dollars and Russia - amounting to 34.5 thousand US dollars.
"In short, we are being attacked from all directions, in terms of the price of fuel and grains; we are being affected by restrictions from Russia, probably the prices cannot be restrained... At this stage, we do not need to import eggs at all, we have enough production. We have always had the border unprotected, and now even more so. You know what the situation is in Turkey, there are no tourists yet, this is compounded by this turmoil, the devaluation of the Turkish currency and they are more willing to sell the product abroad - in Georgia, in this case. We are in an unlucky situation, when it comes to importing eggs, and this perishable product still remains for sale,” - the chairman of the Georgian Poultry Development Association Zurab Uchumbegashvili declared.
When asked whether a change in prices for locally produced products is expected, the chairman of the Georgian Poultry Development Association said the rise in prices would be inevitable.
