The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has postponed its meeting originally scheduled for today to discuss the "Megobari Act," as stated on the committee's official website.
Earlier, Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen issued a statement on the committee's website announcing the introduction of the bipartisan "Megobari Act." The statement underscores U.S. support for the Georgian people, highlighting concerns about the Georgian government's violent actions against peaceful protesters. It also reaffirms U.S. commitment to Georgia's Euro-Atlantic integration.
The "Megobari Act" includes provisions for sanctions and visa restrictions targeting senior Georgian officials. Key measures outlined in the act include:
- Conducting a comprehensive review of the U.S.–Georgia relationship, including all assistance programs.
- Acknowledging the Georgian people's support for their country's constitutionally enshrined commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration.
- Requiring the President to impose sanctions on Georgian Dream officials and their associates who have engaged in corruption to obstruct Georgia's Euro-Atlantic integration, undermined the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, or committed other acts of corruption detrimental to Georgia's stability.
- Strengthening people-to-people ties and defense cooperation once Georgia realigns itself with its constitutional requirements.
- Expressing support for Georgia's full sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of ongoing and illegal Russian occupation.
- Supporting civil society efforts to protect the Georgian people and their Constitution from abuses by the Georgian Dream government.
