U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has sharply criticized Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party for what he described as “appalling” politically motivated charges against opposition figures. Wilson voiced his condemnation on social media, denouncing the government’s actions as a betrayal of democratic values.
His remarks came in response to a statement issued by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), which warned that Georgia is moving dangerously close to full autocracy under Georgian Dream’s leadership.
“Even by Georgian Dream standards, the regime’s new politically motivated charges against opposition leaders are appalling. This sick behaviour mirrors the tactics of their patrons in Moscow and Beijing. The anti-American Georgian Dream regime is betraying its people in favour of Moscow, Tehran & Beijing,” Rep. Wilson wrote.
The controversy follows the launch of criminal proceedings against several prominent opposition figures, including Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nikanor Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze, and Badri Japaridze.
Wilson’s comments add to a growing wave of international concern over democratic backsliding and the Georgian government’s increasing alignment with authoritarian powers.
