The Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Mariam Kvrivishvili met with the experts from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who are working on the master plan of the Kutaisi International Airport. Irakli Karkashadze, General Director of the United Airports of Georgia, also attended the meeting. The IATA, which is an internationally recognized organization, will develop a general plan for the development of the Kutaisi International Airport. It has implemented similar projects for the airports of such successful cities of the world as Rome, Athens, Warsaw, Istanbul, etc.
As it was mentioned at the meeting, the existence of the master plan will give the Georgian government the opportunity to implement a consistent policy in the Kutaisi International Airport for the next 20 years and respond to the requirements in the aviation and tourism sectors.
,,The development plan will be a guide for the Georgian government in three main directions. This is the first expectation that the Georgian side has considering the pace of airport development - today the Kutaisi International Airport is one of the fastest growing facilities in Europe. Accordingly, the master plan should determine the passenger flow in the period of 20 years. Based on the growing passenger flow and flights, it is necessary to determine how to develop the airport and terminal infrastructure. Another main direction is the diversification of target markets, airlines and destinations, so that the contribution of the Kutaisi International Airport to the regional and national economy is always growing," - Mariam Kvrivishvili said.
Deputy Minister also paid special attention to the airport as one of the major employers in the region.
It was noted at the meeting that the experts of the International Air Transport Association will prepare a short-term, medium-term and long-term plan for the development of the Kutaisi Airport within 6 months, which means the preparation of the master plan of the airport in the next 5, 10 and 20-year perspective.
The IATA experts visiting Georgia also held meetings in the United Airports of Georgia, as well as with the other agencies involved in the development of the Kutaisi Airport. They also arrived at the terminal of the Kutaisi International Airport and its airport part and got acquainted with the current situation and possibilities.
