The Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Otar Shamugia, spoke about the Georgian nut sector noting that nuts are an important culture for the country and one of the key export products. Thousands of farmers are employed in this sector throughout the country, the majority of them in Western Georgia.
"Last year, Georgian nuts worth of approximately $ 115 million were exported. It is important that the market is as diversified as possible and 70% of products are exported to the EU market. This year, we have been monitoring the ongoing processes in the sector. Due to the climatic conditions, as well as other external factors that took place in the world market, we could not get the same quantity and quality of harvest as last year. We held a number of meetings with the representatives of the sector and, as a result, we launched a new state program that will be tailored to these specific needs," - Otar Shamugia said.
