After Georgia was granted the status of a candidate country of the European Union, many difficult, controversial decisions were made by your parliament, the government, which, instead of bringing Georgia closer to the dream of 90 percent of the population of Georgia in connection with joining the European Union, separated Georgia from the membership of the European Union, - about it in Georgia Ambassador of the European Union, Pawel Herchinskiy, said at a meeting with students at Caucasus University.
According to him, in December of last year, Georgia was granted the status of a member of the European Union, Georgia's accession to the European Union is very important for the vast majority of Georgians, and especially for young people."The European Union took a very, very long time to make a decision to open its doors to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. I will tell you very openly that the opening of this door was made possible only by the courage, dedication and suffering of Ukrainians, who defend not only their country, but the civilized world, the rules that are the core of the civilized world, this made us decide that you, together with Ukrainians and Moldovans, deserve, to become a part of the European Union", the ambassador noted.
In addition, according to him, after making this decision, the Georgian government made many decisions that are completely incompatible with the basic principles and values of the European Union."But what happened after Georgia became a candidate country?" After we've decided we're ready to take you in the heart? Many difficult, controversial decisions were made by your country, your government, which, instead of bringing Georgia closer to the dream of 90 percent of the Georgian population - joining the European Union, took Georgia away from the European Union. "A lot of decisions made by the Parliament of Georgia and the Government of Georgia are in contradiction with the basic values of the European Union," the Ambassador noted.
However, according to him, false narratives, propaganda, misinformation directed against the West and the European Union in general are unacceptable from a country that aspires to join the European Union."Unfortunately, these conspiracy theories, these narratives, these strange theories continue to persist.Let me say it loud and clear, from our side, from the EU side, we are ready for Georgia to join us, but it requires serious reforms and everyone knows what needs to be done. Last year we published an enlargement report on Georgia, where it is written in detail, what steps need to be taken, everyone knows what needs to be done. To make it easier, we have formulated our main recommendations in the so-called in 9 steps. There is one page, 9 steps - one page. "Instead of working on these reforms, too many initiatives have been implemented that are completely incompatible with our norms and values," the ambassador noted.
According to him, after the elections, it is possible for Georgia to act quickly on the way to join the European Union and make up for lost time."I think and hope that very soon after the elections we will resume work on Georgia's accession to the European Union and make up for the time we lost. We are ready to work with any democratically elected government, but if the government violates the main principles: freedom, democracy, human rights, rule of law, unfortunately, I have to tell you very openly that Georgia cannot become a member of the European Union, it is impossible. If a country wants to join the European Union, it must fully respect the basic principles of the European Union, which are included in the European agreements. Freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law are non-negotiable. Please, go to the polls and vote, it is your constitutional right and it is also your civic duty. The future of your country is in your hands. This is your country, this is your decision, your choice, no one can make a decision about the future of your country except you," the ambassador stated.
