Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, announced that the Georgian Chargé d’Affaires was summoned to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs on July 11, amid growing international concern over democratic erosion in Georgia.
In a statement posted on X, Stenergard condemned the recent imprisonment of opposition leaders, arbitrary detentions of activists, journalists, and peaceful protesters, saying such actions undermine democracy and violate European values.
The summons followed a joint statement by 17 foreign ministers and the EU High Representative, released by the British Embassy in Georgia. The statement urges Georgian authorities to release unjustly detained individuals, repeal repressive laws, and engage in inclusive national dialogue to resolve the ongoing crisis.
