
The volume of sugar imports to Georgia has halved. Particularly, in March 2022, 6,415 tons of sugar (worth $ 4.049 million) were imported to Georgia. In the same period last year, the country imported 12,486 tons of sugar (worth $ 6.034 million).
The list of the countries, where Georgia bought the product in March this year is as follows:
• Azerbaijan - 3,316 tons ($ 2,063 million);
• Poland - 3,078 tons ($ 1.923 million);
• France - 13, 7 tons ($37.7 thousand);
• Turkey - 5.2 tons ($20 thousand);
• Armenia - 1.4 tons ($ 1,800).
Less than 1 ton of sugar was imported to Georgia from Belgium, China, Israel and Russia.
It should be noted that in the same period last year, Georgia bought sugar mostly from Brazil - 9,500 tons, 1,206 tons from Poland, 997 tons from Turkey, and 174 tons from Belarus. This year, neither Brazil nor Belarus are included in the list.
To be reminded, after Russian’s invasion of Ukraine, panic buying of sugar began in Georgia, which led to a shortage of the product.
